Raw access page counts are provided for each individual page, but all other statistics are for combined accesses to all pages on the Spiders site. While most of the use will undoubtedly be by team members, all accesses are true usage statistics, no testing or debugging page loads are included.

This page is not updated in real time, so if you reload a page, you will not see the count for that page increment until after the next time the stats compiling script has been run. It is typically set to execute twice a week, overnight on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Statistics are for all accesses since April 25, 2001, the day the Spiders site came online.

How are people finding the Spiders site?

The Spiders Web site will undoubtably be used mostly by team members, but eventually it will work its way into various Web search engines and possibly onto lists of team sites, etc.. What follows is a basic breakdown of how people are getting to the Spiders site. These stats are combined totals for all Spiders pages.

Note that some Web search services license and use a variety of different actual search engine software products. For example, the Netscape and Yahoo search pages run Google software. Likewise, some search sites actually query multiple services. When you type a search in Metacrawler, it searches the Lycos catalog, the Excite catalog, and many others. The statistics listed below count the search page, not the behind the scenes search engine. In other words, a search started at search.netscape.com is listed as a Netscape search, even though it queries Google. Only a search started at google.com is reported as a Google search, etc..

"Internal Link" means that someone moved back and forth among pages within the Spiders site. "No Referer" means just that, no page referer information was recorded. This is often an indication that someone has bookmarked the site or has typed in the URL manually. "Undetermined Referer" means that refering data was provided, but that it was from an address for which the statistics reporting script does not explicitly check, most likely a more obscure search engine or from within an email message (as in when you send a message to someone saying "take a look at this link").

Who is using the Spiders site?

By checking remote host/IP address, it is possible to do some basic analysis on what types of users are loading Spiders pages, i.e. from where they are doing that loading (.com, .edu, foreign countries, etc.). "No Host" means that no host name information was provided, only an IP address. In such instances no separate attempt to resolve the domain name is made. "Undetermined Host" means that the host was from a domain that is not explictly counted.
